How to care for crocheted yarn toys

Here are some simple instructions to keep your toy looking beautiful and clean for years.

1. Hand washing is the best option
   Hand washing is the best way to preserve the toy’s shape and softness.
   – Fill a bowl or sink with lukewarm water (up to 30°C)
   – Add a mild baby shampoo or wool detergent
   – Submerge the toy in water and gently press to remove dirt (avoid harsh rubbing and wringing)
2. Machine washing – only if necessary and gently
   If the item is heavily soiled and hand washing isn’t enough, use a gentle wash cycle:
   – Place the toy in a laundry bag or pillowcase to protect its shape
   – Use cold water (30°C) and a gentle spin cycle (preferably 400–600 rpm)
   – Avoid fabric softeners, as they may alter the texture
3. Drying – air dry only, not in a dryer
   – Do not wring – press out excess water gently
   – Roll the item in a towel and press lightly to absorb moisture
   – Let it dry flat and reshape it. Avoid hanging, as this may stretch the toy
   – Do not use tumble dryers or radiators, as heat can damage the yarn and cause frizz
4. Removing small stains
   – Use a damp microfibre cloth and dab lightly on soiled areas
   – Small stains can also be cleaned with baby wipes
5. Storage and long-term care
   If the toy is not in constant use, store it in a dry, well-ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight which can cause colours to fade.
