How to care for a crocheted yarn toy?

Here are a few simple guidelines to keep your toy looking lovely and clean for years to come.

1. Handwashing is the best option
   Handwashing is the best way to preserve the shape and softness of the toy.

Fill a bowl or sink with lukewarm water (up to 30°C).
Add mild baby shampoo or wool detergent.
Soak the toy and gently press to remove dirt (avoid heavy rubbing or wringing).

2. Machine washing – only if needed and with care
   If the toy is heavily soiled and handwashing doesn’t help, you can use a gentle machine wash:

Place the toy in a laundry bag or pillowcase to help it retain its shape.
Use cold water (30°C) and a gentle spin cycle (preferably 400–600 rpm).
Avoid fabric softeners as they may change the texture of the item.

3. Drying – air dry, not tumble dry
   Do not wring – instead, gently press out the excess water.
   Roll the toy in a towel and press lightly to absorb moisture.
   Lay flat to dry and shape it back into its original form. Avoid hanging it as it may stretch.
   Do not use a tumble dryer or radiator, as heat can damage the yarn and make it fuzzy.
4. Removing smaller stains
   Use a damp microfibre cloth and gently dab dirty spots.
   Smaller stains can also be cleaned with baby wipes.
5. Storing and long-term care
   If the toy is not in regular use, store it in a dry and ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, which can cause colours to fade.
