How to care for crocheted yarn toys

Here are some simple tips on how to keep your toy beautiful and clean for years.

1. Hand wash is the best choice
   Hand washing is the best way to preserve the toy’s shape and softness.

Fill a bowl or sink with lukewarm water (up to 30°C).
Add a mild baby shampoo or wool detergent.
Submerge the toy in water and gently press to remove dirt (avoid harsh rubbing and wringing).

2. Machine wash – only if necessary and gently
   If the item is heavily soiled and hand washing isn’t enough, you may use a gentle wash cycle:

Place the toy in a laundry bag or pillowcase to help it retain its shape.
Use cold water (30°C) and a gentle spin cycle (preferably 400–600 rpm).
Avoid fabric softeners, as they may alter the texture.

3. Drying – air dry only, not in a dryer
   Do not wring – gently press out the excess water.
   Roll the item in a towel and press lightly to absorb moisture.
   Let it dry flat and reshape it. Avoid hanging, as this may stretch the toy.
   Do not use a tumble dryer or radiator, as heat can damage the yarn and cause frizz.
4. Removing small stains
   Use a damp microfibre cloth and gently dab the soiled areas.
   Small stains can also be cleaned with baby wipes.
5. Storage and long-term care
   If the toy is not in constant use, keep it in a dry, well-ventilated place and avoid direct sunlight, which may cause colours to fade.
